Why Rural Adolescents Need a Dedicated Civic & Skill Studio
Between ages eleven and eighteen, young people navigate rapid transitions: moving from the village primary school in Jausiers to secondary classrooms in Barcelonnette, forming independent peer identities, encountering social-media pressures, and making early choices about vocational, academic, and civic pathways. Without structured non-commercial gathering spaces outside school hours, rural teenagers often tell educators they feel caught between spaces built for small children and adult venues where youth have no active voice.
To address this formative stage, ASSOCIATION VIVRE JEUNE A JAUSIERS operates the Espace Jeunes Chastel—a mentored second-floor workshop hub at the Maison des Associations dedicated to citizenship, psychological and physical health awareness, and practical skill building. Consistent with our Association loi 1901 charter, participation involves zero commercial charges, as public youth grants and municipal subsidies sustain our facilitators. All membership fees and dues are fully reinvested in the association's public interest missions.
Three Practical Modules Conducted Over the 2026 Term
Rather than passive lectures, every Wednesday afternoon and Friday early-evening workshop engages teens as co-authors and active practitioners:
- 1. Democratic Deliberation & Municipal Youth Council: Twenty-four middle-school and high-school participants learned how a French commune adopts public budgets and manages shared spaces. Sitting in a moderated circle, teens drafted proposals for bicycle-rack placement, shared sports-court timetables, and winter cultural evenings, presenting them constructively to municipal youth liaisons with mutual listening and respect for differing viewpoints.
- 2. Psychological Health, Peer Empathy & Digital Balance: Partnering with prevention specialists from Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, cohorts explored stress management before exams, healthy sleep cycles, recognizing cyber-bullying mechanisms, and knowing how to support a peer or reach trusted local health adults. Interactive theatrical role-play allowed shy adolescents to articulate boundaries and practice non-violent communication safely.
- 3. Pre-Professional Autonomy, PSC1 First Aid & BAFA Pathways: For older youth aged 15 to 18, coordinators led practical workshops on writing a first curriculum vitae, understanding associative governance, completing level-1 civic first-aid readiness (Prévention et Secours Civiques), and preparing for the French BAFA youth-leader diploma so local teens can qualify for future seasonal educational roles across the Ubaye Valley.
“Learning how to speak in front of twenty people without staring at a phone, and realizing that adults at the Maison des Associations actually take our project notes seriously, gave me confidence for my lycée oral exams and BAFA application.” — Manon, age 17, Youth Civic Studio Member in Jausiers
Long-Term Impact on Territorial Vitality
Over the past twelve months, five Jausiers seventeen-year-olds mentored through these workshops successfully completed their introductory BAFA training and returned to assist our Wednesday 4–7 and 8–12 age groups under senior educator supervision. By investing public-interest resources into adolescent responsibility, emotional literacy, and civic skill-building, ASSOCIATION VIVRE JEUNE A JAUSIERS helps ensure that rural youth step into adulthood as confident, empathetic contributors to community life.
Inside the Curriculum: How Respect, Teamwork & Health Literacy Intersect
Educators and visiting health partners in Alpes-de-Haute-Provence often remark that citizenship and psychological wellbeing reinforce one another directly during adolescence. When a thirteen- or sixteen-year-old feels isolated, anxious about school performance, or overwhelmed by online comparison, civic participation stalls; conversely, when teenagers build a concrete group project together in a welcoming, non-commercial room, self-esteem and mutual empathy flourish naturally.
To put that insight into daily practice at 7 Montée du Chastel, our autumn–spring cycle alternates four concrete skill studios:
- Oral Expression & Constructive Disagreement: Using local civic case studies—such as how to share a village sports pitch fairly among age groups or how to reduce single-use waste during summer festivals—participants practice speaking for two minutes without interruption, summarizing a peer’s argument accurately before replying, and drafting consensus solutions.
- Media Verification & Audio Documentary Craft: Equipped with shared associative microphones and offline editing laptops, teens learn how headlines are framed, how to verify factual sources against rumor, and how to conduct respectful 20-minute interviews with local Jausiers craftspeople, nurses, mountain guides, and municipal councilors.
- Physical & Emotional Self-Care Routines: Co-led with qualified prevention educators, workshops demystify stress physiology, demonstrate simple breathing and posture recovery after long school bus commutes, discuss nutritional energy for growing bodies, and clarify confidential local public support lines available to youths across department 04.
- Project Budgeting & Collective Accountability: Even though ASSOCIATION VIVRE JEUNE A JAUSIERS engages in zero commercial trade, learning how public money is stewarded responsibly is vital civic training. Teen delegates help compare supplier catalogs for board games or art paper within a fixed €350 public-grant micro-envelope—understanding firsthand why caring for collective equipment allows more youth activities to thrive.
How Parents & Secondary Schools Collaborate with Espace Jeunes
Throughout the school year, our coordinators maintain open, respectful communication with families and educational liaisons at the collège and lycée in Barcelonnette—never turning the youth studio into a rigid classroom extension, yet ensuring homework corners, quiet revision tables before Brevet and Baccalauréat exams, and encouraging adult mentors are always on hand. Every workshop remains 100% non-profit and free of commercial solicitation under RNA W041000115.
